#Myth: Radiation from Microwaves Creates Dangerous Compounds
Do you worry about radiation from using a microwave? Do you feel that heating food in the oven is a safer bet?
The word “radiation” can often evokes scary associations. Why? It’s because we often hear it being linked to diseases such as cancer and other health hazards, thereby making people wary of their use. Before jumping to any conclusions, it’s important to get the full picture and first understand how microwaves work.
Here’s what you should know.
1. How Microwaves Heat our Food.
Microwave ovens use high levels of “micro-waves” to heat up our meals. These types of waves are absorbed by the water found in our foods, which causes the water molecules to vibrate and produce heat.
2. Microwaves are Safe for Food.
The radiation produced by a microwave is different from the radiation from nuclear weapons. Since they do not use X-rays or gamma rays, microwaves cannot change the molecular structure of our food, i.e. they DO NOT make our food radioactive!
3. Microwave Ovens are Leak-Proof.
Microwaves are designed to strictly produce micro-waves in the oven itself – making it a safe and convenient appliance to use in the kitchen.
However, if you do suspect your microwave is broken, stop using it and buy a well-functioning one. Ovens that are damaged or modified could leak radiation, which could be harmful. Stay cautious and don’t skimp out on this useful technology!
Other than heating food quickly and safely, microwaves also require much less energy than conventional ovens. So although microwaves have their place and time, there are still plenty of benefits to using them.
